YCN Crit3
Today we had our third YCN crit, which Liv and I were looking to use to help us move forward and consolidate our idea in order to allow us to focus on producing and defined product. This is exactly what this crit did for us; it gave us a lot of direction and focused our idea in on one specific product, notebooks. After talking to our crit group to get feedback, they collectively said that a notebook is one aspect of a graphic designers stationary that they appreciate. We realised that this is also an area which we can tactfully apply quality traditional print techniques which graphics designer will appreciate.
'Mmmm, that with a nice bit of white type'......
It was only yesterday that we witnessed the boys in the class looking at the Fedrigoni sample stocks in the studio; they were sniffing it, touching it and looking at it in depth. Seeing this made us realise that if we provide designers with something that they can touch and relate to their practice, then they are going to be more inclined to use it. We then thought that our designs should be minimalisitic as we are showcasing the papers and what you can do with the papers and not what is on the papers. Consequently, we have decided we want to produce notebooks with a small, simple and personalised message on them. A personalised message on the notebook will make the design relate to it more and make them feel like it was made for them. They will then make a connection and think that Fedrigoni have an interest in them as a designer; making them more inclined to want to purchase their papers.
We then began to consider how we would get our product to the audience. Our crit group suggested a mail shot would be suitable; if themselves as a graphic designer received a nice little notebook, personalised and in a nice little package, sat on their desk on morning then they would consider the company as a potential to buy paper from.
All in all, todays crit has given us a lot of direction and pushed into an area which we can now explore fully.
