I have created the designs below to essentially become the side banner/navigation and the buttons for the first page.
I like the design of this but I feel there may be a little too much white space that it seems bare, so I am going to try using the block coloured buttons.
I think this looks a lot better and once some of the finer details are included it will look at lot more professional (well hopefully!)
